The Economic Stimulus Package and Rural Broadband

leave a comment »

For any of you that know me, I’m a huge proponent of government incentives for broadband expansion in rural America.  Broadband is a necessary infrastructure project, many times *more important* than any other foundation a rural community can lay for economic development.

The good news – President Elect Obama is looking to expand the Universal Service Fund to finance broad based broadband deployment in rural communities.  The Daily Yonder has the take here. That plan looks to be well thought out, with the onus on private enterprise to take the change.  The Yonder again comments “States probably would use the money to hire private companies to build networks in remote areas.”

Good news indeed.
