50 Authentic American Experiences – Bald Eagles in Nebraska

According to Time magazine’s 50 Authentic American Experiences, bald eagles are the draw in Nebraska for 2009. Time lists Lake Ogallala as the place to go, but many other opportunities exist statewide.

Up in the Loup Valley, bald eagles are abundant as they follow the major migratory patterns of waterfowl and other birds on the great central flyway. You can learn more about the opportunities to watch bald eagles here. I’d suggest several spots in the area: Davis Creek Reservoir, the scenic overlook south of Happy Jack Peak, Fort Hartsuff, Anderson Island in Ord, Hannaman bayou at the Calamus (caution: in the past, there has been a nesting pair in the area and park personnel have roped off parts) are just a handful. Other suggestions are welcome.

When you’re making your next birding trip, think of this area before you book – easy access and small crowds make it one of the more affordable and leisurely treks in Nebraska.
