LINCOLN, Nebraska (AP) – Nebraska has the nation’s second highest rate of volunteering for the fourth straight year.

A government survey released Tuesday shows almost 39 percent of Nebraskans volunteer, ranking behind only Utah’s 44 percent.

The Cornhusker state is second nationally with about 50 volunteer hours per resident and a 79-percent volunteer retention rate.

The report says an estimated 528,100 Nebraskans contribute about 67 million hours of service a year. Total value of Nebraska volunteerism is $1.4 billion.

The Corporation for National and Community Service puts out the annual report, which is based on U.S. Census Bureau data.

  1. I can really vouch for the great volunteer spirit in this area. Keep Loup Basin Beautiful had 454 volunteers helping with environmental projects in our 9 counties last year. Not one of these projects would have been possible without lots of help! Thanks to everyone.
There are many oppurtunities out there to really make a difference in your home communities.
